Another sketchbook project image.I had to laugh when I read that quote (above.) When I was growing up, my mother always used to say, "You'd look so much better if you'd put on some lipstick."
I was never into lots of makeup or lipstick, unless it was a neutral color...but even then, I was typically more interested in its moisturizing capabilities than anything else. But my mom almost always wore a really kick-ass red lipstick, and you know--unlike most people, she could really carry it off, and she always looked great in it! It doesn't really look that good on most people, in my opinion. I remember as a little girl, I loved watching her put on her lipstick. She was transformed in Revlon's "Love that Red."
But then, unlike me, she had, (as she herself would call it,) "good liposity."
If she was still alive, August 25th would have been her birthday. Here's a big red-lipstick kiss for my mom.
"Where lipstick is concerned, the important thing is not color, but to accept God's final word on where your lips end." (Jerry Seinfeld)
Amen to that.

Oh yes! This is so familiar.
My mother could and did wear Tangee's Red-Red.Me? It always went bluish!
And that Seinfeld quote ought to be hung, large font, in every beauty salon!
I feel naked without my lipstick. That journey in my head with just a twist of red!
Hi Sue,
I remember your mom in typing class! What a nice and wonderful person! My mom only had a few lipsticks, all from Merle Norman. Unlike you, I am a makeup junkie. I think I find it creative to always change my look.

Love this post and painting. My Grandmother was the Red lipstick wearer. Also matching red nail polish. She wore Coty lipstick. My mom wore lipstick but not very dark and I have aways used a plae pink..as pale as I could get it the better. :) Now I just wear chapstick. lol To me the eyes are more important.
oops. thats a pale pink...
Great sketchbook, lovely lipstick!
Your sketchbook brings a "spot of color" to me everyday, and today you also deliver a couple of chuckles with the Paltrow and Seinfeld quotes and a quiet tender moment recalling your mom. Nicely done.
Such a simple image - painted beautifully!
Your touching and funny post, today, has made my morning, Sue. A lovely tribute to your mom. I agree that red lipstick is not for most of us, but those who can pull it off, just sing with it.

Love the Seinfeld quote! My dad's birthday is the 26th. Loved reading about your mom. Mine always wore red lipstick too.
My mom used to say the same thing - put on some lipstick! She was into red too. I look like a kick ass clown with red lipstick!
Love the sketch and the touching post! Happy Birthday to Sue's mom!!
How lucky she was to know just what was right for her and to enjoy doing it! I'm with you; it's strictly for moisture so I wear only the gooiest lip gloss, not much color, and I know I need the color because, on the few occasions when I do put on color, people always remark on how lively I look. But time is precious and I don't have time to be finding that place where God made my lips end all the time..... :-)
Love it! My mom, too, could wear all the wonderful brights, cherry red, royal blue, bright turquoise, and she'd top them all with her dark hair and bright red lipstick. Not me. Being a more toned down person I have to go for the not-quite royal and the almost-bright pink amd one-step-away red and, of course, the more subdued lipsticks that go with them. The reds she used turn me into "THE MOUTH"! Everything else just dissapears. I'm more than likely to just do with out it. Boy, do I have some serious mother envy here to deal with!
Thanks for all your lovely watercolors. (I also have some serious watercolor-artist-envy to deal with too.)
This darling watercolor reminds me so much of Wayne Thiebaud's lipstick paintings!
BRAVO
really wonderful work. feel like rushing of to the powder room now!
Thanks, everyone! You know, my mom wore red lipstick, but in every other way, she was very subtle and classic--not "loud" at all in her appearance. But she did look really good in that red lipstick.
Lisa, sweet of you to remember her--she really enjoyed you--I remember her telling me with laughter about all your exploits in that wacky class.
